10th Anniversary Celebrations

On Saturday 7th of January we celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the Gammie Family taking over the helm at Kirktown Garden Centre. We will be holding events throughout the year to commemorate this auspicious time but on the anniversary we started with a couple of unexpected treats for our customers.

Mr Alastair Mitchell of Stonehaven was the first customer through our doors and kindly cut the ribbon for us. As a thank you, we
gave him a luxury hamper. He was not alone however, as the first 10 customers in our Restaurant found out that breakfast was on us.

Help us celebrate this year and join us in any of the upcoming events and little treats as they happen and remember to keep an eye on our page to see what's happening.

FARM NEWS

Thought we would let you know how things are progressing on the farm.

You have given us great support with our new venture of farm grown vegetables. There will be turnips and potatoes available for some time yet but the frosty weather has meant no freshly picked carrots nor beetroot but these are still available form our vegetable store. Our cabbages are almost finished and parsnips and baby leeks can only be picked when weather permits.

We are now busy planning our 2012 plantings and your feedback has helped us decide what we can and should grow this coming year. We are ordering plants and seeds for the following: Beetroot, Brussel Sprouts, Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Carrots, Garlic, Kale, Lettuce, Leeks, Onions, Parsnips, Purple Sprouting Broccoli, Potatoes(Charlotte and Maris Piper), Swedes and Turnips.

Our Aberdeen Angus cows should begin calving in April. They are kept inside until calved to enable us to watch over them and deal with any problems.Once calved the cows go outside to enjoy the fresh green grass of Spring. Last years calves were weaned in October and have grown on well over the Winter. They too will go out to grass in April and will mature over the summer months before returning inside in October to fatten on a diet of our home grown silage and barley. Our own succulent beef should be ready for sale around Xmas or early 2013.

Keep checking this page for news of our progress with calving.

The 'Eagle' has Landed!

Our new Landmark Sculpture has been unveiled to the Local Press today.

We have been looking for a suitable replacement for 'Flash Harry' for some time now, and have decided to replace him with a sculpture created by local artist L. Grant Robson, of LGR Sculptures

LGR Sculptures was established in 2010 as a result of Grant's increasing interest in designing and creating sculptures from scrap metals.

The Eagle, now in proud place on our lawn overlooking the A90, is made from disused plough shares and other agricultural cast offs, which is somewhat fitting to a family with a farming background.

We very much hope that the Eagle becomes as prominent a landmark as the horse was.

Over the coming weeks we are running a 'Name the Eagle' Competition for all children (>12yrs) - to enter pick up a colouring and naming competition sheet from our Restaurant to be in with the chance of winning the fantastic prize of 'Adopt an Eagle' from Edinburgh Zoo.
